And munching on them while they're still warm is a pure delight. Children and adults alike adore sugar cookies. Add these treats to the buffet table, serve them to unexpected guests, or wrap them for a from-the-heart home-baked gift. 4 cups sifted all-purpose flour Makes 6 dozen cookies. Prep time: 30 minutes. Bake time: 10 minutes.
Heat oven to 325 degrees. On floured surface, roll dough to 1/8 inch thick. Cut out cookies with floured cutters. Transfer to ungreased baking sheets; refrigerate until firm, about 15 minutes. Bake until edges start to brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Cool cookies on wire racks. Royal Icing1/4 cup meringue powder Makes 3 cups of icing. Total time: 15 minutes. For icing: In large bowl, add meringue powder to cold water. Beat with mixer to soft peaks. Mix in sugar, a cup at a time. Beat until stiff peaks form. STEP-BY-STEP TIPS 1. Assemble all ingredients. 2. Tint frosting by stirring in food coloring a small drop at a time. 3. Fill a pastry bag (store-bought or plastic sandwich bag) with frosting. Overlap sides of the bag to create a cone shape. Cut small corner from plastic sandwich bag. 4. Gently squeeze bag to decorate cookies with icing. Add sprinkles, nuts and candies. |
